Report on "Martial Arts For The Deaf"

by Hawke Robinson last modified Sep 20, 2015 11:26 PM
For my ASL III Winter 2007 report I researched a topic near and dear to me: Martial Arts. Of course this was with the added information of the Deaf community. I hope to become proficient enough in signing that I can help teach members of the deaf community Kung Fu where I'm currently an assistant instructor at.

I'm currently training and assistant instructor at Kung Fu For Life near the corner of Mission and Ruby in Spokane, WA.

I found out a lot of interesting twists and turns when researching martial arts for the deaf, and the report covers in brief (due to be restricted to only 3 pages for the main body) some surprising styles such as "Martial Signing" using ASL vocabulary signs as martial arts defense techniques.

This is my fourth style of Kung Fu since 1975 (on and off), in addition to having studied Aikido since 1974 (on and off) and a little Gojoru Karate. I hope to become proficient enough in ASL to be able to instruct deaf and hard of hearing students directly without the slowdown and obstacles of needing an interpreter. I have been studying ASL since Summer 2006, and hope that by the end of Spring or Summer 2007 my proficiency will be sufficient (though certainly not yet mastered) to begin accepting students from the Deaf and hard of hearing community.
