Weekly

Saturday Spokane ASL Study Group (Currently active)

Garland Rocket Bakery (903 West Garland)

Saturdays 4:00 pm to 5/6:00 pm

The Spokane ASL (American Sign Language) study group meets weekly every Saturday from 4:00 pm to either 5 or 6:00 pm depending on attendees.

All levels of signing skill are welcome from ASL 1 beginners, to advanced signers. Sometimes members of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community attend as well. If you arrive early, or right at 4:00 pm, please be patient and do not leave if you do not find others signers. Some people can't make it until a little late, even 20-30 minutes late due to work, traffic, weather.

Some only attend the second half of the session because of their more advanced signing skills, or because of their schedules.

The study group sessions are loosely structured, but when there are beginning signers, we typically follow roughly the following schedule:

4:00 - 4:15 pm: Finger spelling, numbers, and survival vocabulary.

4:15 - 4:45 pm: Extending Basic Vocabulary.

4:45 - 5:00 pm: Short stories (in ASL), usually about the signer's previous week, or upcoming week, to help practice basics.

5:00 - 5:15 pm: More advanced signs/vocabulary topics (for example "political signs", "countries, or "computer signs", etc.).

5:15 - 5:45 pm: Longer stories. More involved ASL signing conversations, telling specific stories/concepts.

5:45 - 6:00+ pm: Social signing. Everyone chats in ASL, a more casual group conversation on some topic (try to avoid inflammatory topics like politics, religion, etc.).

There is a PDF available for download that can help facilitate study group sessions. You can find the latest download here: http://spokaneasl.com/downloads/documents

The Study Group schedule is NOT set in stone, and used only as a guideline to help keep things flowing, and accessible for all levels of signers.
